The decision to have rhinoplasty surgery should be one of the most empowering decisions a person can make. Taking charge over one’s appearance and the way the world sees you is an amazing thing to be able to do, and one that should come with optimal benefits. One thing that holds many people back from receiving this type of procedure is the recovery time. Everyone has heard horror stories about how slow recovery can be, but these are just those – stories. There are many things you can do to help yourself recover faster, and with less pain, than ever before. Here are just a few tips on how to quickly recover from Chicago rhinoplasty surgery.
Get Healthy Beforehand
A healthy patient will recover from any type of surgery faster, and rhinoplasty is no exception. Follow all your doctor’s directions for surgical preparation, including the ones directing you to quit smoking and drinking in the weeks leading up to the procedure. Take all medication, before and after the procedure, exactly as directed. It’s also a good idea to be in good physical shape prior to the surgery. This will aid in the speed of your recovery, and also help you maintain a healthy weight even while you are recovering, and less likely to be active.
Use Saline
One of the most painful parts of recovery is being in a dry environment. Depending on the time of year, your rhinoplasty surgery can coincide with an especially dry period, or you may live or work in a particularly dry atmosphere. This can cause the nose to feel irritated, and the temptation to touch it can be overwhelming. Using a saline solution along with ointment in your nose any time you start to feel it become dry can help immensely with this irritating side effect of surgery, and will prevent your nose from crusting over. Be careful not to use too much, or to blow your nose, as that will cause even more pain and slow down your recovery time.
Take It Easy
While you shouldn’t simply lie down and sleep for the weeks following surgery, be sure not to be overly active either. Avoid any activity that requires your face to move up and down or around, and stay away from any sport in which you’ll have to bend over. This puts a lot of pressure on your still-healing nose, and can slow down healing. It’s also a good idea to avoid playing contact sports, or sports such as basketball and volleyball, until you’ve completely healed, to avoid re-injury.
