In 2017, society is all about healthy living. But, healthy living leaves little room for over-indulgence in fats, sugars, and sodium. To many people’s dismay, this also includes liquor. For those who like to socially drink or have a relaxing glass after a long day, this can be very discouraging. The need to still indulge in the occasional alcoholic beverage has led some to investigate if there is a healthier way to drink liquor. Luckily, there are at least five liquors you can consume without wrecking your health. Here are some healthy choices for your next trip to the Liquor Store.
1. Vodka
In regards to calorie intake and health benefits, vodka makes the list as one of the healthiest liquors you can consume. In just one shot, vodka contains only 64 calories. Recently, studies have also pointed out that vodka improves heart health. So next time someone tells you to put down your glass, just remind them that it’s a necessary part of your health routine.
2. Whiskey
While drinking whiskey does increase your chances of having a hangover, it makes up for it in calories. With only 70 calories a shot, it’s easy to get over the guilt of that nightly drink. Of course, with any alcoholic beverage, moderation is key.
3. Gin
Gin has around the same calorie intake as whiskey. The major difference between the two is gin has less likelihood of causing a hangover. It may be difficult to resist mixing gin but, to stay on the “healthy” side of drinking, avoid adding a sugary drink. This could increase your calorie intake two to three times.
4. Coconut Rum
With the lowest calories of all hard liquor, coconut rum easily makes the list. It has only 51 calories. The coconut flavor makes it more tolerable when drinking it straight.
5. Wine
While wine is not considered a hard liquor, it is sold in liquor stores and has properties that have been observed to help with heart health. Research suggest that drinking wine helps open blood vessels, allowing more oxygen to flow to the heart.
A good rule of thumb when trying to remain healthy while drinking is to refrain from mixing. Mixing increases the calories and sugars you ingest. If you must use a mixer, avoid drinks high in sugar.
