Choosing the best teeth whitening gel

by | Sep 18, 2015 | Dentist

People start out with bright, sparkling white teeth all thanks to the enamel surface. Over the years teeth will be affected by food, beverages and smoking, eventually they will lose their lustre and become stained. It must be understood that when teeth are stained it is not the tooth enamel that changes colour, it is the next layer into the tooth which is the dentin that stains. Redesigning your smile with teeth whitening is a very common solution to this problem. Teeth whitening gels are used by your dentist to reduce staining and brighten your teeth.

It is always best to trust your dentist to whiten your teeth. The dentist will apply a hydrogen peroxide gel to the surface of your teeth; the dentist will use a blue light to accelerate the whitening process. Although results will vary somewhat you should see dramatic results in about three sessions.

The blue light method of teeth whitening that only is available in the dentist’s office takes about an hour per session. The dentist or an assistant will first apply a light-sensitive gel to the teeth. A blue light which is actually an ultraviolet light source accelerates the chemical reaction. To ensure that the hydrogen peroxide gel is only applied to the teeth and not the gums the dentist uses a protective gel as well as a dental dam.

Teeth whitening will not have any effect on teeth which have been capped, fitted with porcelain veneers or filled with either amalgam or epoxy. If you are considering redesigning your smile with teeth whitening then they must be virgin. If this is not the case then your dentist will no doubt suggest porcelain veneers.

There are a number of teeth whitening systems available for use at home; some are available from the dentist while others are available over the counter at a pharmacy. It is suggested that before you even consider an OTC kit that you first discuss the product with your dentist. When you purchase a kit from the dentist it will come complete with a tray that the dentist will purpose make to fit your specific teeth and gums. The drawback with OTC kits is the tray, it is a “one size fits all” device and it is difficult to control the bleach, it can easily get on the gums. The recommended dosage of hydrogen peroxide is 35 percent, any more than that can be dangerous; furthermore, not all OTC systems give the desired results.

Redesigning your smile with teeth whitening is one of the fastest and least expensive ways of getting a bright, dazzling smile. You are invited to make an appointment with Hills Dental care, you will be glad you did.
