Inconel 625 tubing is an alloy with nickel, chromium and molybdenum that has niobium added to it which increases the strength of this tubing chemically. This is accomplished at the molecule level. Additional tensile strength can be obtained with heat treating the tubing to obtain the desired characteristic. Other minor components in this alloy include carbon, silica and iron.
Characteristics of Inconel 625
This alloy has a density of 0.305 lb/in3 and a specific gravity of 8.44. The melting range of this tubing is from 2,350 to 2,460 F. It has also been placed on stability protocols and found to show no signs of divots or crevices forming after 18 months of exposure to sea water. It has also proven to be restraint to other corrosive mediums including highly oxidizing chemicals with minimal effects on the structural integrity of the alloy.
Applications for this long lasting alloy tubing
This alloy tubing is presently being used in the aerospace industry along with applications on high temperature furnaces, chemical plants and seawater installations when long life and structural integrity are important factors.
Hot Work with this alloy
Hot work can be accomplished with this tubing above 1,850 F but below 2,100. Below 1,850 F the tubing become rigid and is no longer pliable. Above 2,100 F the tubing can lose its structural integrity. When cooling the tubing after heating it to shape should be accomplished uniformly to keep the tubing consistent in its thickness and tensile strength.
Cold Work with this Alloy
This tubing can be cut with low speed machinery. If high speed is desired, the cutting edge should be of the carbine variety and a sulfur based fluid used as the cooling medium.
Welding
The use of a tungsten electrode or like consumable electrode should be utilized in a gas-shield process welding application when joining two ends. Proper welding technique should also be followed including clean surfaces that are to be joined along with uniform fit of the junction. After welding, the joint will still have the base chemical resistance to corrosion as the un-welded sections.
Inconel 625 tubing is a high temperature and corrective resistant material used in many industries where material fatigue has to be avoided. This makes it possible for the component or system this material is used in to have an extended life-span.
