The Synthetic Sling – Some Things You Should Know

by | Sep 7, 2015 | Rigging

When lifting heavy objects, the sling can be a valuable tool. A synthetic cling has the advantage of often being stronger and better able to withstand the elements than some slings made from natural materials. When working with a synthetic sling, there are a few things you should know. You should be able to understand the different hitches used with a sling, you should be aware of safety protocols when using a sling, and you should know how to purchase the right sling for your job.

Types of Hitches on a Synthetic Sling
There are three basic types of hitches used with a sling. The first is the straight hitch, which basically just involves the cling lifting the load with a hook. There is also a choker hitch, which works by wrapping around a load. The key with the choker hitch is that it has to stay tight to work. The last type of hitch is the basket hitch, which also wraps around the load, but now in a way that cradles the load and spreads the weight more evenly.

Synthetic Sling Safety
Slings can be used in very dangerous situations, with heavy loads being suspended for periods of time. With this in mind, safety is of paramount importance when using a sling. The first rule of sling safety is never to load a sling to more than its capacity. Another rule is never to use horizontal angles of less than 30 degrees. Finally, a sling must be cared for and inspected regularly, and used correctly. Failure in any of these areas could result in severe personal injury or even death.

How to Buy Synthetic Slings
You need to know several things about slings before you decide to purchase it. First you need to make sure the size, including the length and the width of the sling, fit correctly on you. If you’re unsure about what to look for, most salespeople will be able to help you. Second, you need to know which material you want, whether nylon or polyester: it depends on the types of loads you carry. Third, you need to specify the placement of any wear pads and detail if any protective coatings are to be used. You may also be asked to describe what type of end fittings are needed if you are offered a choice.
