Metal Forming Capabilities of Stamping

by | Apr 19, 2016 | Business

The general term that is used to refer to a wide range of capabilities for metal forming capabilities and industrial uses is deep draw metal stamping.  It is also referred to as metal pressing that is a cold forming or cold working process that is done at room temperature. This type of stamping process is known as deep drawn stamping, or deep draw stamping, when it corresponds to a particular dimension.

Materials

Different metals can be deep drawn; such as aluminum, brass, cold rolled steel, copper, HSLA, stainless steel and others that are included in the deep drawn metal stamping process.

The three types of stamping presses used by Trans-Matic:

  • Individually Cam Operated Press (ICOP)

In these transfer stamping presses; as the part progresses, a part is transferred via transfer fingers through the forming process. Installed in the press one station at a time are die components.

  • Die-Set Transfer Press

In these transfer stamping presses, as the part progresses, a part is transferred via transfer fingers through the forming process. Attached to die plates are the tooling components so that the die can be attached in the press as a single unit.

  • The Progressive Die

In these stamping presses, a part is carried on the webbing of steel as the part passes through the forming process.

Characteristics
1. Wall thickness variation: Deep draw metal stamping exhibits some wall variation thickness. Additional or secondary may require consistent thickness.

2. Work hardening: As the raw material is formed into shapes using the deep drawing process, the grain structure is stretched and the material of the properties is strengthen by cold worked generating worker. This hardening work results in part that was finished had more strength compared to the based material that was used to produce it.

3. Radii: In some instances, sharp corner radii are not allowed to undergo stamping process by deep draw metal but it can be achieved by another processes. A good general rule of the thumb is that the inside radii from the corner should not have starting stock thickness less than 1/2X.

4. By deep drawing process, very precise parts are produced; however, it is sometimes unable to get some allowances that can be achieved by grinding, lapping and machining.

Conclusion

The materials, processes and equipment utilized in deep draw metal stamping and industry has been the most inexpensive but effective dated methods used for forming metals and alloys into definite shapes.
