Is All T Track Aluminum The Same?

by | Aug 12, 2016 | Aluminum

Sometimes there are terms that become used within an industry that are universal in their use. For example, the slotted track that is used in a wide variety of applications or even the T-slot systems used for framing and construction are generally called t track or t-slot. However, it is not always the same between manufacturers.

In fact, there are several differences in t track aluminum components that can make matching different types of T-track and T-slot frustrating for those not aware of the differences. By being aware of the differences and by purchasing from the same company you can avoid these issues and make sure the track purchased is exactly what is required.

Actual Track Size

Different manufacturers have slightly different sizes in their t track. This can include slight differences with the exterior width and depth that can make it difficult to mesh or integrate two different brands of the track into existing configurations, particularly when inset into a work area.

In addition, there are different types of t track aluminum for different specializations. Some companies produce what is known as a mini-track while others also offer a miter track that has an additional slot component.

Heavy Duty Track

While aluminum is known for durability and resistance to surface scuffing and corrosion, the heavy duty types of track are certainly more dependable over long use periods than the flimsy, lightweight track.

The lightweight types of t track aluminum are more likely to twist and wrap when used with heavy items being stored, moved or clamped on the track. This can be offset somewhat by using more fasteners to hold the track in place. Even this will not stop the twisting of the edges of the track, which will result in problems with sliding items down the track over time.

Not All Components Fit

With the slightly different track sizes, not all hardware or accessories for the t-track will fit within different systems. Slight variations in the track size require different bolt head sizes and some require specific t-bolts.

If you currently have an existing aluminum t-track in place and are considering expanding the system, be sure to know what types and sizes of bolts are used on the tracks. This will allow you to choose new track material that will be fully compatible and work well with the current tracks and accessories.
