How to Get More from Your Machine Shop

by | Jan 20, 2017 | Machinery and Equipment

Have you thought about expanding your CNC machining or boring operation capabilities, so you could take on new business? This might be a good idea but there are several other options you may wish to consider. The following tips can help you increase production without spending a great deal of money.

Make it Easier on the Workers

Go through your shop and study what each person does. There may be a much easier and simpler way to do these things. For example, by changing the layout or design you may be able to cut steps or eliminate tasks. When you create greater worker efficiency it takes less time to perform tasks safely. This can result in greater output for your milling or boring operation.

Keep the Shop Clean and Organized

A clean shop is better organized and things can get out of hand if you wait until the end of the day to cleanup. How can this be solved? Give workers a few extra minutes before or after lunchtime. This will give them a chance to straighten up and get ready for the afternoon.

Check Measuring Instruments for Accuracy

Shop measurements for your boring operation and other services must be as accurate as possible. One mistake can ruin an entire work piece or project. At least once a month, your important measuring tools should be re-calibrated if they see regular use.

Maintenance Checks

Downtime can be your biggest enemy and it can often be prevented with simple maintenance checks each day. Before every shift, each worker should have a check list for his or her specific machinery. This can draw attention to problems before they get bigger and turn into major maintenance issues. Also, make sure workers report unusual noises or things about equipment operation, as soon as they are noticed.
