Guidelines for Working With 5083 Aluminum Plate

While aluminum 5083 is one alloy, there are different types of 5083 aluminum plate on the market. These will go by different names based on the manufacturer as well as the specific applications for the plate.

Ideally, this precision cast plate product is sold in a wide range of different standard widths and lengths from the supplier. This is an essential factor to consider as some mills are able to provide larger plate sizes than others, which may be important for Original Equipment Manufacturers to consider.

Uses and Applications

The most common uses of 5083 aluminum plate include mold base plates used in the injection mold industry, machine parts and mounting, tool and jig applications and well as in reference plates. Other plates using 5083 aluminum are also used for prototype development, robotic components as well as templates and for the construction of vacuum chambers.

Due to its excellent resistance to corrosion with inland atmospheres and its good resistance in marine atmosphere, it is also used in the manufacturing of construction equipment.

Welding

While offering an extremely flat and level plate that is internally stable and resists deformation when working, this is also plate that is considered very good for welding.

This includes both WIG or MIG as well as resistance welding, which can be a problem for many aluminum alloys offering the same corrosion resistance as 5083 aluminum.

Working and Machining

Another plus for the use of 5083 aluminum plate is the excellent machinability rating this alloy receives. It allows for very rapid CNC machining and other processes without the concerns about deformation around the machined areas on the plate.

This is also an aluminum that will polish well, making it ideal for applications where final appearance will be important. It can also be hard anodized, providing additional strength and durability to the surface.
