Electroceuticals May be the Answer to Autoimmune Disorders

For millions of people all over the world, autoimmune disorders are devastating. Rheumatoid arthritis can cripple joints, creating constant pain and preventing people from enjoying everyday pleasures in life. Lupus can cause a host of illnesses which may be life threatening. Thanks to modern technology and electroceuticals, there may be help available for many autoimmune disease sufferers.

Problems with Modern Autoimmune Treatments

Autoimmune disorders are caused by an overactive immune system. For some reason, the body’s natural defenses are turned on itself. In the case of rheumatoid arthritis, joints are attacked and become inflamed. This can eventually result in disfiguration and immobility.

For years now, drugs have been the mainstay for autoimmune disease treatment. In order to prevent the immune system from attacking itself, immune suppression drugs are used. However, there is a problem with this treatment strategy.

Immune suppressants limit the function of the entire defense system. This leaves the body vulnerable to a wide range of infections and diseases. For example, a common cold or flu virus may develop into a more serious condition like pneumonia when the immune system is suppressed. However, electroceuticals (in the form of nerve stimulating implants) do not work like drugs.

The Vagus Nerve and Immune System

Your vagus nerve has a great deal to do with inflammation control. During a study, an implant designed to stimulate the vagus nerve was tested with positive results. The study was conducted by the Feinstein Institute for Medical Research along with the University of Amsterdam.

17 people were given electroceuticals (implants) and checked for four months. During this period, everyone noted a reduction in joint inflammation and testing revealed that immune cells which cause joint damage, had reduced by nearly 40 percent. In the near future, it may be possible to help many people with inflammatory conditions, enjoy enhanced quality of life.
