Factors In Choosing An EMI Gasket

by | Sep 23, 2016 | Distributors & Fabricators

Our world is one in which communication devices are important. Increasingly we rely on electronic gadgets to help us do a variety of tasks in our lives. Whether we are talking on our cellphones or using electronic equipment to drive a driverless car, we all depend upon them being reliable. They have to function without interference of any sort. This would not be possible without an EMI gasket.

What Are EMI Gaskets?

EMI stand for electromagnetic interference. It may also be called radio-frequency interference or RFI. In both instances, the role of the gasket is to reduce or prevent entirely such interference. In this manner, the telecommunication devices can operate with reliability. As grounding and shielding products, they help to maintain the big three:

1. Signal Integrity by shielding EMI emissions and preventing external emissions

2. Electrical Performance

3. Protection of the device from water damage

They accomplish this without breaking as a result of the high levels of mechanical stress.

Grounding and shielding products must maintain, ensure, and do so without shattering under the often high levels of mechanical stress

How to Choose EMI Gaskets

All EMI gaskets are not created equal. Different types provide diverse levels of effective EMI shielding. When choosing the right EMI gasket, it becomes important to look at various factors including:

* Operating Environmental Conditions: This includes such properties as temperatures, elemental forces, salt spray, solvents and other physically demanding conditions

* Mechanical Requirements: Make sure the proper mechanical design is used to meet the specific requirements of the components(s).

Compression-Deflection: Make sure the proper compressive force and deflection percentage are realized to ensure proper functioning

* Compression Set: If the gasket must fluctuate through a continuous process of compression and releaser, make sure the compression set is able to handle it

* Electrical Stability

Another important factor to consider, one always in the forefront of both fabricators and manufacturers is the cost of installation. Check with the fabricator about what mounting techniques will keep the costs low in terms of assembly and materials.

The EMI Gasket: Maintaining Signal Integrity

EMI gaskets are an integral part of our electronic world. They provide shielding and grounding solutions to ensure reliable performance of many devices. Our electronic toys such as smart phones, notebooks and tablets require the help of EMI gaskets. So, too do various items in the aerospace, automotive and appliance industries. They would malfunction, be unreliable and generally fail to perform as expected when required without the application of the small but vital EMI gasket.
