This rugged design means control panels are built to last for years or even decades, so any potential cost saving computers could provide are minimal.

Computer interfaces are typically sensitive in nature, and few provide tactile feedback. In many industries, simple mistakes can lead to dangerous results. Industrial control panel manufacturers know how to create devices that are responsive, and the integrated lights many use make it clear if a button is depressed.
