What is an Acceptable Uptime Guarantee for Cloud Hosting?

by | Apr 28, 2016 | Business Service

The trends towards web hosts offering cloud computing services has reached an all-time high in recent years. With all of the benefits associated with cloud storage, consumers, resellers, and providers are all flocking to take advantage of what the cloud has to offer.

One of the things that is not talked about very much with cloud computing services, however, is the typical uptime that can be expected with cloud hosting. While web hosts that use traditional servers will provide uptime guarantees of 99%, 99.95%, or 99.99%, many question whether or not cloud storage providers can do the same.

Is There Really a Difference?

A lot of users question whether or not there is really a significant difference between 99%, 99.95%, 99.99%, and 100%. While the difference in these numbers may seem miniscule on paper, the difference in these numbers when it comes to performance is certainly a big one.

To provide an example, a 99% uptime guarantee would mean that, over the course of a 30-day month, it would be acceptable for your site to be down for over three hours. For e-commerce based businesses or those that count on access around the clock, this is obviously not acceptable.

Several studies have proven that a high majority of users that come to a site and do not like what they see will never go back to that site. Obviously a site that is down is going to have just as bad, if not worse, of an effect. So, with the numbers that have been pointed out, there is clearly a significant difference between the uptime guarantees that many hosting services provide.

What is Acceptable?

At the end of the day, the fact that there are cloud storage providers out there that offer 100% uptime guarantee means that anything below that number should be looked at with apprehension. While a guarantee of 99.9% is certainly acceptable, providers offering a guarantee below that should probably be avoided. Doing so can help ensure that the provider you are working with is completely committed to around the clock uptime.
